2019-02-26 Constitutional Court holds event devoted to 27th anniversary of Khojaly genocide

On February 26, the Chairman of the Constitutional Court, judges and staff of the Constitutional Court took part in a public march devoted to 27th anniversary of the Khojaly genocide.

After the march, the Constitutional Court held an event on Khojaly tragedy, one of the bloodiest pages in the history of mankind.

First, the victims of the genocide were commemorated with a minute's silence.

Opening the event, Chairman of the Constitutional Court Farhad Abdullayev said that the Khojaly tragedy is the continuation policy of ethnic cleansing and genocide carried out by the Armenian chauvinist nationalists against Azerbaijanis for nearly two hundred years. It was mentioned that 613 people, including 106 women, 63 children, 70 elderlies were exterminated within one night, 1275 civilians were taken hostage and 150 was missing as a result of the horrific massacre committed by the Armenian armed forces.

The Chairman of Constitutional Court emphasized that the political and legal assessment of Khojaly genocide, one of the bloodiest pages in the history of the Azerbaijani people was given only after the return of the national leader Heydar Aliyev to power and only by initiative of great leader on February 24, 1994 the Parliament adopted resolution ”On the day of Genocide Khocaly” .

It was mentioned that President Ilham Aliyev has always been in the focus of bringing the massacre to the international community and recognizing it by the world, perpetuating the memory of the victims of the tragedy, and enhancing the social protection of their families and relatives. Thanks to these steps, the systematic work on the promotion of the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, as well as the international recognition of the Khojaly tragedy, has been carried out in recent years.

Chairman noted that numerous events are held every year in different countries around the world and in this regard, on February 5, 2019, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, signed a decree on the twenty-seventh anniversary of the Khojaly genocide.

Chairman also specified the important projects implemented within the framework of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation to promote the Khojaly genocide. The invaluable contributions made by the First Vice-President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mehriban Aliyeva, in this area were especially highlighted. As a result of this successful activity, a number of countries, more than 20 US states, as well as international organizations have made decisions to recognize the Khojaly genocide. As a result of these efforts, the world community is now more aware of the Khojaly tragedy and the occupation of our lands.

Farhad Abdullayev noted that the international campaign “Justice for Khojaly” initiated by Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Leyla Aliyeva played an important role in promoting the truth about the Khojaly genocide by the world states and the international community. As part of this campaign, large-scale events are being held every year in more than hundred countries.

Commenting on the principle, "There must be a punishment at the crime scene", Farhad Abdullayev said that those who committed crimes against Azerbaijanis in Khojaly will be punished.

At the end of the meeting it was mentioned that the delivery of Khojaly truths to the world community is the duty of every Azerbaijani. The Khojaly tragedy is a blood memory of the people of Azerbaijan that will never be forgotten.
