29 years passed from the date of the tragedy of January 20 which is the mournful and at the same time valorous page of a modern history of Azerbaijan. Every year, including this year, the Constitutional Court honored the memory of shahids of January 20.

Judges and Staff of the Constitutional Court participated in a ceremony of honoring of memory.

At first, the memory of shahids of the tragedy was honored with a moment of silence.

The Chairman of Constitutional Court Farhad Abdullayev, who made a speech at the ceremony, regarded the tragedy of January 20 as an important turning point in the history of independent Azerbaijan, the beginning of our independence. It was noted that the tragedy of January 20 which is one of the most terrible pages of violence in the 20th century is immortalized in memory of our people.

Speaking about an essence of events of Bloody January, Farhad Abdullayev noted that this terrorist attack was conducted for the purpose of punishment over the civilians which took to the streets in protest at attempts of violation of territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, prejudiced policy of the leadership of the former USSR against our country, the position of local heads contradicting the interests of the people. Invasion into Baku and other areas of the republic by the Soviet military units revealed an essence of imperial policy. The cruel dispersal of mass protests of civilians by means of heavy military equipment was the attempt of maintaining the collapsing Soviet political system.

It was noted that the great son of the Azerbaijani People National Leader Heydar Aliyev who did not leave the people in these hard days, having come on January 21 to permanent mission of Azerbaijan in Moscow, made the historical statement condemning act of terrorism. Having endangered his life and life of members of the family, having shown big courage, Heydar Aliyev gave a political legal treatment to the tragedy on January 20, told that this crime, committed on fault and treachery of heads of the former USSR and the republic, contradicts to democracy and humanity.

It was brought to attention that after return of the national leader to the political power in 1993 the important steps were taken for investigation of causes of the tragedy on January 20 and for prosecution of guilty persons. Namely owing to Heydar Aliyev's initiative the political legal evaluation at the state level was given to the tragedy of January 20. On March 1994 the Milli Majlis adopted the resolution in this regard. Owing to this legal document the event of January 20 has been regarded as military aggression and crime against the Azerbaijani people.

Having emphasized that the great leader covered by state care of families of shahids and disabled people, the chairman told that the President Ilham Aliyev with great success continuing a political policy of the great leader put as important tasks the decision at the state level of problems of families of shahids and persons who lost health. By the order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the families of shahids of January 20 were granted the Presidential pension and our state constantly support them. Many memorial complexes are created in our country with the purpose of perpetuating the memory of shahids.

Then Judges and Staff of Constitutional Court watched the movie “Hail” narrating about the tragedy of January 20 and filmed by the director Elhan Jafarov. The author of the movie is the honored journalist Agil Abbas.

There were a listening of the work of W.A. Mozart "Requiem" performed by the Azerbaijani State Symphonic Orchestra named for U. Hajibeyli under control of the people's artist Rauf Abdullaev in the Azerbaijani State Academic Philharmonic Hall devoted to memory of the victims of the tragedy of January 20.
