On June 8 the Constitutional Court of Azerbaijan and German Society for Technical Cooperation (GTZ) co-organized Monday a roundtable meeting on the impact of decisions of the European Court of Human Rights on national legislation and judicial practice.

Chairman of the Constitutional Court Farhad Abdullayev said protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms was an integral part of the legal system of a democratic state. 

Abdullayev noted the Constitutional Court refers to both the national legislation and provisions of international legal documents on human rights. “It allows the Court, while examining cases, to adhere to democratic principles adopted by international organizations”, he added. 

According to Abdullayev, to seek additional evidences the Constitutional Court also refers to cases of the European Court of Human Rights. 

Judge of the European Court of Human Rights Khanlar Hajiyev briefed the participants on the structure and activity of the Court, Case Law, legal force of decisions and other issues. 

Hajiyev pointed out the Strasbourg Court contributes to developing the Law of Europe and ensuring the values enshrined in the European Convention. 

He also underscored legal cooperation between Azerbaijan`s court instances and the European Court were developing successfully.
